Dr Gerasimos Tsourapas has been selected for Harvard University’s Center for European Studies 2019-20 Visiting Fellowship programme.

Center for European Studies’ Visiting Scholars are chosen from a pool of applications from post-doctoral social scientists and historians who are working on modern Europe. They continue their research on the Harvard campus while engaging with CES faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and participating in study groups, seminars, and conferences.

During his four-month visit, Dr Tsourapas will finalise a new book manuscript that examines European and Middle East states’ foreign policy decision-making processes in the context of the Syrian refugee crisis. Building on fieldwork in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey funded by the British Academy and the Council for British Research in the Levant, Dr Tsourapas identifies the emergence of “refugee rentier states,” which seek to capitalise on cross-border mobility.

While in the United States, Dr Tsourapas will also be giving guest lectures on migration and Middle East politics across a number of American universities, including Yale University, New York University, University of Pittsburgh, Boston University, and Harvard University. Dr Tsourapas also aims to foster closer ties and an exchange programme between the College of Social Sciences, University of Birmigham and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.
