Painting in the Classical World

The Classical Archaeology Seminar is a new research seminar of the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham. This year’s seminar theme is on Painting in the Classical World. Young researchers and prominent international scholars will present papers cover a wide chronological, geographical and thematic range: new readings of Minoan wall paintings, the polychromy of painting and sculpture in Classical and Hellenistic Greece, the pictorial repertoire of the late Classical and early Hellenistic funerary paintings in Bulgaria, the impact of the Roman expansion on Italic painting in the late fourth and third centuries BCE, as well as the polysemy of Roman wall paintings.

Seminars are held every other week of the Autumn Term 2016 (excluding Reading Week) on Wednesday afternoons at 17.00 in the Arts Building, Lecture Room 7 (2nd floor) on the North campus of the university. All are most welcome to attend. Papers typically last 50 minutes and are followed by questions and discussion over refreshments, and there is often an opportunity to join the speaker later over dinner.
