Innovative uses of technology allow the complex recreation of lost landscapes in their human and environmental dimension. We also focus on more traditional approaches to understanding landscape through survey and through a focus on monuments and buildings in landscapes, exploring issues such as phenomenology and historic landscape characterisation.

Environmental approaches are particularly strong in this area, focusing on achieving a detailed understanding of past environments through faunal, invertebrate and botanical sources. Research in all these fields has potential for informing future responses to global environmental change, a key priority for the sector.
