The aim of my research is to examine the relationships between various social and ethnic categories of difference in the former Begi district in Western Ethiopia. It particularly focuses on the changing meanings of the label ‘Mao’ with the aim of discussing how individuals assume identities that are at once ethnically and hierarchically defined and how these are manifested, performed and transformed in practice.
