“Immediate Effect” invites scholars from across disciplines and around the world to consider texts produced in 1989, a year widely considered to be a pivotal one in global history.
This workshop adopts a broad conception of ‘text’ – including books, essays, films, and speeches – in order to engage with the pace of change during that transformational year. The second instalment of a trilogy of workshops and edited volumes dealing with textual production in three transformational years, “Immediate Effect” builds upon a 2017 workshop entitled “Textual Turning Point: The Futures of 1944” and the companion volume, Reading the Postwar Future.
