Birmingham Eighteenth Century Centre

Empire and identity are unavoidable problems in the contemporary public sphere; the same could be said for the eighteenth century. For this year's BECC reading group, we'll be delighted to welcome Onni Gust, of the University of Nottingham, to discuss their new book, Unhomely Empire: Whiteness and Belonging, c.1760-1830 (Bloomsbury, 2020).

Following the same format as last year's book group, on Katie Barclay's Caritas, we'll begin on Thursday 18 November with comments on the book by two friends of the Centre, Liz Egan (Warwick University) and Ellen Smith (University of Leicester), and a discussion aimed at developing our thoughts and questions. Then, on Thursday 25 November, we'll have the opportunity to present those questions to Dr Gust and continue our discussion.

Both sessions will take place online, via Zoom, from 13:3 to 15:00 GMT, and are free and open to all.
