Rural to urban migration in 18th century Scandinavia - evidence from the maritime sector

This working paper is an output of Dr Jelle van Lottum's ESRC-funded project which investigates the impact of labour migration on the pre-industrial European economy.

When examining labour migration the focus has frequently been on the classic push/pull economic relationship; this his seen as the primary reason for people to migrate. In this paper Aske Brock (University of Kent, formerly at Birmingham) and Dr Jelle van Lottum seek to nuance this picture by investigating human capital levels, life cycles and the possibility for social advancement for migrants.
