Celebrating South Asian Music in the West Midlands

University of Birmingham researcher and AHRC Cultural Engagement Fellow Dr David Kerr presents an evening exploring the South Asian musical heritage of the West Midlands, in collaboration with Sampad Arts.

The evening offers a rare chance to hear sounds spanning 60 years of South Asian music production in the Midlands, including material by some of the leading movers and shakers in the South Asian music industry.

David’s recent work in the region has explored and uncovered a rich legacy of diverse and distinctive musical styles including Naat, Qawwali, Bhangra and Urban Desi and many of these will be reflected throughout the evening along with performances from Eternal Taal Dhol Drummers, S-Endz (of Swami) and performers from theYousaf Music Academy (Mohammad Yousaf, Abaas Khan, Dara Singh and Mohsin Anjam) .

We will also be in conversation with veteran British Asian singer/music producer Amarjit Sidhu, Surjit Simplay artist (film/photography/installation) and cultural curator/researcher Tas Bashir.
