Meanings of Black History

Meanings of Black History was a round table of historians from a number of UK universities, together with other professionals in the sphere of ethnicity, to debate the meaning of ’black history’ and the methodological issues it faces.

This event, hosted by BRIHC at Birmingham University in November 2016, considered the influence of factors such as school curriculums, media clichés and stereotypes, access to historical evidence, collective traditions, patterns of mobility, and experiences of gender and class on the various understandings of the concept of black history.

Speakers include: Norma Gregory (Independent researcher, Nottingham News Centre); Azeezat Johnson (Geography, University of Sheffield); Kadian Pow (Black Studies, Birmingham City University); Keith Shear (African Studies, University of Birmingham)’.

The output of the round table was captured in a YouTube video and a transcript of Twitter feeds.
