Holly Seglah is a recent graduate of the International Law and Globalisation programme with an optional year abroad. We caught up with her in her 4th and final year and asked her to tell us about her university experience and if she has any advice for prospective applicants.
“My best piece of advice in writing a personal statement is to write about what you want out of university, the skills and understanding you wish to gain from the course and what you want to know more about, what sparks your interest and why your past experiences have led you to this point.
“I chose the University of Birmingham because my course is so unique and the modules are so interesting! Birmingham as a university also has an incredibly warm and inclusive student life which really helps create such a positive university experience.
“Joining the university netball club contributed majorly to the fond memories I shall retain from my time at Birmingham. Sports clubs are a must no matter what you are into or if you just want to try something new and to socialise. I know I will have friends for life from the girls I have met through the club and being the team captain in my second year also allowed me to develop interpersonal and communication skills which no doubt will benefit me in my future workplace.
“I spent my year abroad in Australia and loved every second of it! Not only did I get to live and travel around Australia, I was able to undertake some incredible modules such as Aboriginal studies, Psychology and the Law and Australian Human Rights.
“I hope to undertake a Master's degree in international development and to attain internships over the summer with the UN Development Programme, in the hope of advancing my career as a humanitarian working with international NGOs."
