My research seeks to identify the recurring features of the cross-examination of human trafficking complainants in England and Wales. This has involved qualitatively interviewing barristers about their experiences and perceptions of trafficking cases.
It goes on to consider the appropriateness of the questions that are asked. For example, should the law restrict ‘why didn’t you just leave’ questions. This assessment has been guided by Roberts and Zuckerman’s foundational principles of criminal evidence.
