The Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Elizabeth L'Estrange as a Lecturer in the History of Art. A specialist in French art of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Elizabeth takes up her post in September 2011.

Currently a researcher at the University of Liège, Belgium, Elizabeth's work focuses on the role of women as patrons of art in the late medieval and early modern period. Her recent book Holy Motherhood: Gender, Dynasty and Visual Culture in the Later Middle Ages (Manchester University Press, 2008) winner of the 2010 Best First Book Prize of the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship, examined images of holy motherhood and childbearing in late medieval manuscripts, with particular emphasis on Books of Hours.

We all look forward to Elizabeth's arrival, which will bring with it an important addition to the range of expertise in the Department by an outstanding scholar.
