A Research Event with Professor Tim Dean (University of Illinois, USA)

Location
Muirhead Tower - Room 420
Dates
Wednesday 21 March 2018 (14:00-16:30)
Contact

Prof. Lisa Downing (L.M.Downing@bham.ac.uk) and Dr Kate Ince (k.l.ince@bham.ac.uk)

Organised by the “Intersecting Identities" Research Stream, Department of Modern Languages, and the cross-University Sexuality and Gender Studies Network.

The event will comprise a lecture by Professor Tim Dean entitled “Hatred of Sex”, followed by Q&As.

This lecture puts the political philosophy of Jacques Rancière into conversation with psychoanalysis, aiming to restore to his theories of democracy the categories of sex and sexuality that Rancière mostly ignores.  Professor Dean hypothesizes a homology between the disorder that characterizes democracy in its original form - governance by the multitude - and the psychically disordering effects of sex. That homology is explored further in the context of the #MeToo movement.

There will then be work-in-progress talks and discussion by four University of Birmingham researchers:

  • Dr Elliot Evans (French Studies)
  • Dr Charlotte Ross (Italian Studies)
  • Connor Murphy (M3C PhD student, Nottingham Trent University and University of Birmingham)
  • Amy Gunn (MRes Sexuality and Gender Studies)

All welcome.
