PhD Title: An Interdisciplinary dialogue between cinema and its posters: Italy 1945-1979
Supervisors: Dr Clodagh Brook and Dr Lara Pucci(University of Nottingham)
PhD Italian Studies

I completed my BA in Science and Technology of Art at the University of Palermo in 2009. Subsequently, I obtained my MA in History of Art cum laude at the University of Siena, in 2012, under the supervision of Prof. Luca Quattrocchi. My thesis focused on an Italo-Hungarian graphic artist - Il “graphikus” Ferenc Pintér (1931-2008). Currently, I am a PhD student at University of Birmingham (as from October 2015) where my research focuses on Italian film posters from 1945 to the 1970s. My research is embedded in the Interdisciplinary Italy, 1900-2020 project headed by Dr Clodagh Brook.

My project is fully funded through a competitive Arts and Humanities Research Council studentship, awarded via the Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership.

My research at Birmingham aims to assess the role of artistic creativity in film posters. This will demonstrate the importance of the graphic artist in interdisciplinary exchange between diverse yet complementary expressive means. A History of Art perspective will be employed, focusing on the artists behind key images of Italian cinema between 1945 –1970s. The intention is to place the graphic artist to the fore, rarely the case at present. The study also intends to:

  • verify the close interrelation between film culture, fine arts and figurative culture of consumerism;
  • explore the impact of industrial needs on artistic creativity;
  • evaluate the perception by artists and the cinematographic industry of external pressures throughout  film poster development;
  • improve understanding of post-war Italian society.

Other activities

I have previous experience of working at museums and art galleries, including:

  • at the EX3 Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea (Contemporary Arts Centre) of Florence (2011 to 2012);
  • an assistant in a Contemporary Arts Gallery in Turin (Norma Mangione’s Gallery; 2013);
  • at the Museum and Art Gallery of Birmingham (work experience, 2015).
