Qualitative Social and Political Studies

At Birmingham our research into European cultures is carried out alongside social and political studies. This intersection of the cultural and social is at the core of our interdisciplinary research strengths, which include contributions by political scientists, anthropologists and experts in social and media studies. Our work in this area encompasses projects on populism in Western Europe; Italian and Swiss politics; everyday life, precarity and class identity in post-socialism countries; political parties and local democracy; political communication; as well as new media, social networks and activism.

A European Commission 'Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme' titled 'Imagining Development: A Multidisciplinary and Multilevel Analysis of Development Policies and their Effect in the Post-socialist World' is under way in this area of research and will be completed by 2016.
