The University of Birmingham Music Society give their annual concert in Town Hall Birmingham with a programme that reflects on the Great War.

The programme includes three works by the University’s first Professor of Music, Edward Elgar. The orchestra perform Sospiri, a work premiered in London in 1914, and Prelude and Angel’s Farewell from The Dream of Gerontius. They are then joined by the Chorus for With Proud Thanksgiving, written in 1920 with text from Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’. The poem was published in The Times newspaper on 21stSeptember 1914, with the opening stanza:

'With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.'

The second half of the concert moves us to present day composer Howard Goodall and his requiem Eternal Light. Goodall’s work focuses on providing ‘solace for the living that mourn’, and as such he combines select phrases from the traditional Latin requiem text and introduces English poems spanning 500 years.
