The University Chamber Orchestra and Early Modern Vocal Ensemble present an afternoon of music inspired by the stories of Agrippina the Elder and her daughter, the more famous Roman Empress, Agrippina the Younger. The performance presents excerpts from a variety of settings including Handel’s 1709 opera based on Agrippina the Younger (performed as a Barber Opera in 2009), versions by Perti and Pallavicino, and Porpora’s 1708 comical Neapolitan opera telling the exploits of Agrippina the Elder and relationships at court. With this concert we set the foundations for a revival of Porpora’s L’Agrippina that will be performed, fully-staged, as a Barber Opera in September 2017.
