Alessandro Stradella’s 1678 opera La Forza dell’amor paterno returns to the stage for the first time since the 17th century with this Barber Opera production. At stake is the selflessness of paternal love: will a father sacrifice his own marital relationship for the benefit of his besotted son, or will he put his own happiness above all else?
As the story unravels, we are drawn into the inevitable baroque operatic themes of unrequited love and pure desperation, mixed with the usual dose of comedy, and gossiping, as we follow the path of Cupid’s dart.
