University of Birmingham Voices were pleased to perform this month with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor, John Wilson, at Symphony Hall, Birmingham in a gala performance celebrating the 100th anniversary of American composer, Leonard Bernstein.

The performance featured a number of international soloists alongside the light-music maestro – including Kim Criswell, Julian Ovenden, and Scarlett Strallen. Highlights included ‘Make Our Garden Grow’ from Candide, ‘The President Jefferson Sunday Luncheon Party March’ from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and ‘Gee, Officer Krupke’ from West Side Story.

Prepared by Chorus Master, Daniel Mahoney, University of Birmingham Voices performed in the concert at the personal re-invitation of John Wilson, following their critically acclaimed performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard in spring 2017. Rehearsed across the start of the spring term, the university also welcomed John to campus in advance of the concert to discuss Leonard Bernstein, as well as prepare the music for the performance.

Choirs are an important part of University Music in Birmingham, and offer unrivalled opportunities for young singers at any university in the UK. For more information, or if you would like to find out more about choirs at University of Birmingham, please contact Gavin Allsop.
