Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences student perspective: Francesca

Hear from Francesca (1st year) about her experience of choosing to study Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, extra-curricular activities and moving to Birmingham.

Francesca"During my final year of school, I still did not have a set idea of what I wanted to do at University and was struggling to make a decision between history and sports science. The flexibility that the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences (LANS) degree offered me is one of the main reasons I chose to study at UoB. LANS has given me the opportunity to study History and Sports Science side by side as well as exploring new subjects I had not considered before University.

Despite joining the University in the middle of the pandemic I have managed to join multiple societies and try out sports I was not able to do at home. I am currently on the Birmingham’s Cheerleading Team and a member of the Taekwondo club. In addition to this LANS has its own society which has set up ‘families’ across the year groups. This helped me get to know some of the people in my own year as well as older years who are happy to answer any questions about University life.

One of my highlights from this year is from the first day I moved to Birmingham. This is because the University set up an open-air cinema on the Vale, going to see Monsters University with my new flatmates was definitely a good icebreaker. Also, the tower in the movie looks surprisingly like Birmingham’s Old Joe clock tower."
