A Birmingham Popular Maths Lecture from Dr Matthew Jenssen.

How many identical oranges can you fit into a large box? This seemingly simple question, known as `the sphere packing problem’, has occupied mathematicians for over four centuries. More recently, mathematicians have pondered what the correct answer is when you replace normal, three-dimensional, oranges with high-dimensional oranges! In this talk, I will introduce the sphere packing problem and discuss its importance in mathematics, physics and computer science. We will visit the problem in various dimensions and discover that some dimensions have beautiful and mysterious properties that have yet to be fully understood. 

We will be running the Birmingham Popular Maths Lecture series online for this academic year.

The lectures are open to all members of public and the University. Particularly suitable for those studying mathematics at A-level but we also welcome advanced GCSE students. Please register to attend the lecture. There will be time at the end for questions.
