SUMMARY:BPML: ... and Icarus flew - Dr Pietro Servini
UID:www.birmingham.ac.uk/151266
DESCRIPTION:A Birmingham Popular Maths Lecture from Dr Pietro Servini\n
We'’'ve always wanted to fly. The ancient Greeks told of Icarus and Daedalus fleeing imprisonment in Crete on wings of wax and feathers. Sadly, their mythical flight ended in tragedy, but many centuries later, our dreams of taking to the air have become a reality.\n \n This talk is a quick tour through the history of aerodynamics research, showing how the marriage between mathematics, experimentation and computation has allowed us to fly through the galaxies…\n
The Birmingham Popular Maths Lecture series runs in the Watson Building (School of Mathematics) on the last Wednesday of each month, arriving from 18:30 onwards for a 19:00 start.\n
The Birmingham Popular Mathematics Lectures are open to all members of the public and the University who are interested in the study of Mathematics. They are particularly suitable for those studying Mathematics at A Level and we also welcome advanced GCSE students. Young people are welcome on their own, with parents or with a school group.\n
Registration is not required, though those travelling in a minibus should get in touch to confirm parking.\n
