 Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an astronaut? Mathematical thinking and reasoning will help you stand out from the crowd when tackling 'out of this world' problems, but how do we truly develop and implement this style of thinking throughout our everyday lives? Join Jackie, mathematician and theoretical physics graduate of the University of Liverpool, as she takes us on a journey through her unique experience as a candidate on the BBC documentary series Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes? and shows us how we too can put our own maths skills to the test!\n
 The talk is suitable for ages 8+. Families with young children are welcome. \n
 Dr Jackie Bell is a Senior Teaching Fellow at Imperial College, London. Recently made an Honorary Fellow of the University of Liverpool, Jackie has both a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Mathematics Sciences, followed by a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics in 2016. In 2017 Jackie took part in a BBC science production called Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes? for which she was selected from over 3,000 applicants to take part and undertake tests similar to those used in the astronaut selection process at major space agencies. Jackie has a huge passion for communicating science and inspiring others to pursue STEM careers.\n
 The Birmingham Popular Maths Lecture series runs in the Watson Building (School of Mathematics) on the last Wednesday of each month, arriving from 18:30 onwards for a 19:00 start.\n
 The Birmingham Popular Mathematics Lectures are open to all members of the public and the University who are interested in the study of Mathematics. They are particularly suitable for those studying Mathematics at A-Level and we also welcome advanced GCSE students. Young people are welcome on their own, with parents or with a school group.\n
 Registration is not required, though those travelling in a minibus should get in touch to confirm parking.\n
