Facilities

We offer state-of-the-art facilities, including the Institute of Biomedical Research (IBR) and the NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF). The IBR is a £30m JIF-funded facility, the largest of its kind in the UK, including extensive tissue culture and biochemistry laboratories, resources for proteomics and genomics.

The WTCRF is a flagship facility and one of five originally established in the UK, funded by a Wellcome Trust Millenial grant of £3.2 million in 2001. Major investments in research infrastructure include the Primary Care Clinical Research and Trials Unit (PCCRTU) and large Primary Care Research Network (MidReC).

The Institute for Translational Medicine is a £24M, 6000m2 five-floor hub acting as a catalyst to accelerate innovation by co-locating our world class clinical academic teams with substantially expanded clinical trials and stratified medicine programmes, developed in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Due to open in June 2015, this facility has already been highlighted by the government as an important new national resource for translational medicine.

We also have significant links with major NHS Trusts in the region including University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital, and within a number of other NHS Trusts, including Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospitals, as well as Heart of England, Sandwell and West Birmingham and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trusts, ensuring that our research, practice and strategy are well linked in with all of our neighbouring NHS Trusts.
