Dr John Speight is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow for the School of Metallurgy and Materials. He is a member of the Magnetic Materials Group.

Following his B.Sc and PhD studies in the Department of Physical Metallurgy at the University of Birmingham, John Speight worked in the USA at the California Institute of Technology and Bell Laboratories. For over 20 years he held a variety of senior scientific positions at BT Research Laboratories culminating in being head of silicon integrated circuit technology. For 6 years he was Director of Manufacturing at BT&D, a BT/Dupont joint venture which became the world’s first large scale manufacturer of long wavelength semiconductor lasers. Before returning to academia he also worked in Procurement and Marketing roles. Since 1998 he has been a Honorary Research Fellow in the Magnetic Materials.

John Speight’s research interests have included Rare Earth alloy systems, thin metal films, silicon integrated circuit technology, compound semiconductor materials, hydrogen storage media and more recently NdFeB magnetic materials and recycling. His work has led to over 70 published scientific articles, book chapters, edited conference proceedings and several UK patents. During his time with the Magnet and Materials Group he has played a prominent role in writing and managing EU and UK grants.
