BNurs Nursing (Adult) | 2nd Year Student

At school my favourite subject was Biology and I had an unusual liking for medical programs on TV whilst I was growing up; plus my mum has been in healthcare for over 30-years, so I think it was inevitable I was going to pursue a medical-related career. I originally intended on pursuing a career in Medicine but in the end I thought my personality was better suited for a career in nursing and my course so far has assured me I made the right decision. Being an Advanced Nurse Practitioner appeals to me.

The University of Birmingham is renowned for its medical research and for its nursing programme which has produced high-calibre nurses consistently for a long time, so the decision was a no-brainer really. It was a close call between Adult and Paediatric nursing, but I think in the end it came down to opportunity and I felt that adult nursing would provide me with more opportunities than paediatric nursing once I was qualified.

“The placements I have been on have all been fantastic. I don’t think anyone opts to study nursing and looks forward to the paperwork side of things more than the hands-on side of nursing, and all of the placements so far have provided me with so much hands-on nursing skills!! I haven’t been let down yet.”

I think the first year can be quite an eye-opener and over-whelming at times, so I think it is important to schedule some chill out time and discuss any concerns you may have, don’t be afraid to offload anything that might be bothering you. The staff are more than happy to listen to what you have to say and are incredibly helpful and understanding of your needs as the majority of them have gone through exactly the same thing at some point.
