Matthew Broome is an academic psychiatrist interested in the onset of mental disorders in young people. He has worked largely in the area of early psychosis, but is also interested in mood instability, autism, and in suicide and self-harm. His work has utilised functional neuroimaging, cognitive neuropsychology and epidemiology in his research and he has also worked in the philosophy and ethics of mental health.

Biography

Matthew Broome studied medicine and pharmacology at the University of Birmingham, before undertaking postgraduate training in psychiatry at the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals, the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and the Institute of Psychiatry. He has a PhD in Psychiatry from the University of London, and in Philosophy from the University of Warwick. Prior to taking up his current post in Birmingham, he was Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Warwick and Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Oxford.

Early psychosis (particularly prodromal or ‘high risk’ phase), delusions, cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging applied to psychiatry, mood instability, autism and psychosis, philosophy and ethics of mental health and neuroscience, phenomenology.
