'The Kingdom of God is Always but Coming': Justice and the Legacy of the Social Gospel in North America

In the 20th century, the social gospel movement had a far ranging impact upon North American society. This lecture assesses the social gospel as a movement of religious and political reform in North America. Reflecting upon the social gospel’s historical impact upon the United States and Canada, the lecture assesses how the movement’s legacy has shaped 21st- century North American religion and society.
Christopher Evans is the Professor of the History of Christianity and Methodist Studies at Boston University. Prior to his appointment at BU, he was Sallie Knowles Crozer Professor of Church History at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Rochester, New York. His teaching and scholarship focuses on the history of Christianity, religion and culture, and American religious history. He is the author of several books including, Liberalism without Illusions: Renewing an American Christian Tradition, The Kingdom is Always but Coming: a Life of Walter Rauschenbusch and The Social Gospel Today. His most recent book, Histories of American Christianity: an Introduction was published by Baylor University Press in 2013. He is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church.
