Frances Grant, MA Social Work (2009)

Where are you working now and what are you doing?

I have stayed in the same job since qualifying - Long Term Children and Families Team as a Social Worker. We work with any family deemed to be eligible under S17 or S47 of the Children Act. I have families with children on Child Protection plans and in Care Proceedings. I also have some families which we have input into private proceedings - contested residence or contact applications. I have just started my PQ Diploma in order to become eligible for a senior practitioner's post in 18 months time.

What is the best thing about what you are doing now?

Despite the job being very busy and at times stressful, I still enjoy it. I love the variety of cases, and get a great sense of achievement from working with families to improve outcomes for young people. I love the direct work with young people and using lots of different ways of communicating with them in order to get a picture of what is going on in their lives.

To what extent did your social work degree help you secure your first job?

I wouldn't have the job without my degree.

What were the most positive and also the most challenging aspects of your social work degree?

Great teaching team (honestly!). Sometimes I experienced frustration with some of the modules which I felt were slightly irrelevant; having said that, I had already covered similar subject matter in my first degree so I perhaps understandably felt like I was going over old ground.

What advice would you give to current students studying on the social work degree?

Keep going!
