After a year spent interviewing people working in public services in the West Midlands and beyond, the research team from Birmingham's Public Service Academy have identified the skills, values and behaviours that are likely to be evident in effective public servants. During this ESRC Festival of Social Sciences event the research team will share the themes from their work, and crucially pose the question of how to get from where we are to where we want to be.

Issues to be discussed will include:

  • Should attention focus on rethinking higher education and professional training, or on facilitating on-the-job mentoring and work shadowing?
  • Should future workers be lead professionals, embodying a range of problem-solving skills, or should people retain their professional competency working in multidisciplinary teams within neighbourhoods?

Please note that this is an invite only event.
