Michael Drummond (1978-1990)

Michael Drummond (1986-1990)I joined HSMC as a Lecturer in January 1978, teaching mainly in the field of health economics. After being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1984 and a spell as Assistant Director, I became Director of the Centre from 1986 until 1990.

My main memory from that period was the impact of the Thatcher administration on the NHS, including the introduction of the General Management Function, the contracting out of support services and the introduction of the internal market.HSMC also had to make the transition from receiving core funding to a contracting relationship with the NHS.

Although painful at the time, this experience helped me greatly in my subsequent career as Professor of Health Economics and Director of the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York.
