Eastern Europe attracted by concept of mixed economy

Professor Martin Powell was recently invited to Poland to deliver a keynote speech at a conference in Warsaw hosted by the Higher School of Pedagogy of the Society of Public Knowledge. The speech, the English version of which was entitled ‘The Mixed Economy of Welfare and the UK Big Society’ was based on Martin’s book: ‘Understanding the Mixed Economy of Welfare’ which has recently been translated into Polish.

‘As a former communist country, total state provision for welfare services was previously the norm in Poland,’ says Martin. ‘But as a developing Eastern European country, policymakers are becoming increasingly interested in the concept of a mixed economy.’
