In the latest Complete University Guide 2021, Social Work has been ranked fourth in the UK reflecting a steady climb for the department over the past few years, rising six places since 2019.

Social Work at Birmingham brings world-leading research into the classroom to help address some of the biggest social issues of today including mental health provision, child protection and wellbeing, social care and adult-wellbeing, as well as issues related to gender and sexuality. 

Professor Robin Miller, Head of the Department of Social Work & Social Care, said:  “At the University, we are committed to preparing social work students for their professional careers and ensuring that they feel confident in positively supporting children, adults and families. This improved ranking reflects the hard work of our department, and the invaluable contribution to our programme by those with lived experience and our practice partners.”

The Complete University Guide is a highly respected and cited online ranking of over 131 UK universities, plus 70 individual subject to help students compare courses at different universities. The University of Birmingham as a whole was ranked 13th out of 131 institutions surveyed, with 25 academic subjects ranked in the top 10.

The rankings are based on ten measures: Entry Standards, Student Satisfaction, Research Quality, Research Intensity, Graduate Prospects, Student-Staff Ratio, Spending on Academic Services, Spending on Student Facilities, Good Honours Degrees, and Completion.
