Profile for Pat, service user and carer contributorWhat makes you laugh?

The silly every day happenings of life

What makes you angry?

I have been a carer for 46 years for my two sons. One son has physical disabilities and the other has experienced mental health difficulties and have seen a lot of changes over the years – there is more public awareness of disability now. We need honest and a transparent service. When this does not happen, I get angry.

Pat   "I am particularly interested in adult social care provision and view the department of health website an important way to discovering more about this."

How long have you been involved with the Social Work programmes at the university? why did you want to get involved?

I have been involved with the university for about 9 years and would like to think that I am able to influence the way social workers will be working in the future.

Which areas of the BA and MA Social Work Programmes have you worked on?

I work on interviews during the admissions process, and act as a roleplayer and panel member on the Readiness for Practice Learning assessments.

What do you enjoy most about working with the students at the University of Birmingham?

I enjoy raising awareness of real life situations and problems they may face. I feel valued as a carer.

What qualities do you look for in social work applicants at interview? What makes a good social work student?

Empathy and understanding. They should be relaxed and easy to talk to and non judgemental.

What would be your message to Social Workers of the future?

Always be honest, do not make promises that you can’t deliver and look at the whole family and not just the person who needs a service.
