Thesis title: Continuity, adaptation and change within the local voluntary sector field in Birmingham, 1965-2015
Start date: 2017
End date: 2020
Summary:
This project seeks to examine the adaptation and development of voluntary and community organisations, conceptualised as a ‘strategic action field’ (Fligstein and McAdam, 2012) at a local level over a period of significant change. It will relate local organisational change to the context of the wider national political and social evolution of the voluntary sector and communities from the 1960s to the present day. With increasing demands being placed on local organisations to deliver services, support individuals and groups and to step in where the state steps back, this research will seek to further the understanding of the historical experience of organisations operating in localities, how they have been able to respond to change and fit into the local ecosystem over time and how they might do in the future.
