The University of Birmingham and the English Institute of Sport are looking to offer a chartered physiotherapist an exciting opportunity.

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated physiotherapist, striving for clinical excellence, who is interested in moving into sport to undertake a full-time MSc combined with one day a week placement with a world class sports science and medicine team.

The MSc in Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy focused to sport and leading to membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) will commence September 2019. Completion will take 13-15 months, being dependent on the successful candidate's commitments. The English Institute of Sport will provide a £2500 contribution towards the course fees.

Placement experience: English Institute of Sport

It is anticipated that the successful candidate would be located with English Institute of Sport Physiotherapists working in Elite Paralympic Sport. The role of this student will contribute to the further understanding of the Paralympic athlete and the aims and objectives of the English Institute of Sport through:

  • Participating in projects and applied research by data collection and analysis within assignments devised by the Paralympic Physiotherapy team
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data to gain greater understanding of key injuries within Elite Paralympic athletes
  • Collaborating with the EIS staff to create a world class high performance training environment
  • Participating as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of Physiotherapy services to athletes and coaches across up to 3 Paralympic sports

MSc Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy Programme

This programme enables exploration of the theoretical basis of musculoskeletal physiotherapy and its application to the development of clinical reasoning. Using the process of clinical reasoning as its framework, this programme integrates the many approaches to practice in this specialist area. It facilitates an evaluation of existing evidence through the exploration of the assessment and management of musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Admission to the programme is on the basis that applicants will have:

  • Current registration with the HCPC and CSP (includes professional indemnity insurance)
  • A BSc/BA honours degree or equivalent, normally a 1st or 2.1 honours degree
  • Documented evidence of a minimum of 1500 hours experience post registration of working in a neuro-musculoskeletal context
  • Supporting evidence of appropriate continuing professional development
  • Evidence of satisfactory current DBS
  • Evidence of satisfactory health declaration and immunisation record
