Dr Jamie Pringle is an exercise physiologist with interests in sports performance and professional practice in sports science, sports medicine, and coaching. With an extensive background in industry, largely in the British world-class sport sector, his research themes are often founded in real-world challenges and questions. His broader interests are in environmental exercise physiology, ergonomics, and training sciences.

Biography

Dr Jamie Pringle is an applied sport scientist who has held various leadership roles within the British world-class sport sector, including Head of Science for British Athletics and Lead Physiologist for the English Institute of Sport (EIS). He worked across three Olympic cycles providing physiological support to several medal-winning athletes and national governing body programs, along with research and innovation, and professional development responsibilities. Most recently, Jamie was involved in the creation of the Boardman Performance Centre - a commercial sports science, sports engineering and sport medicine facility working with all levels of cycling performance - and now driving a similar venture with Vorteq Sports. Jamie joined the University of Birmingham in March 2022, taking on a role as Associate Professor in Applied Physiology and Leadership in Sport. He received his PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University, in Exercise Physiology, examining cardiorespiratory and muscle metabolism aspects of high intensity exercise. Through his time in industry, he maintained an active research and reviewing profile in collaboration with various universities, and most recently as a member of the UKRI REF2021 review panel (SP24). Jamie has 20 years of experience in advising cyclists and other endurance athletes and has coached riders to over 80 national titles and multiple British records.

Teaching

Jamie coordinates several modules around Leadership in Sport at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, including development of a new MBA in this area, and all under the guise of the Graduate School for Sport and Professional Practice (GSSPP). He contributes to various applied science modules including Athletic Training and Conditioning. He supervises BSc, MSc, and PhD student projects in areas aligned with his research interests, and Professional Doctorates in collaboration with industry partners.
