Michael Mansfield is a lecturer in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Michael's research interests include, but not limited to, pain mechanisms, musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain presentations. Michael has expertise in psychophysics and evidence synthesis methodologies. Michael has worked in senior leadership and advanced care practitioner positions across public and independent healthcare and academic sectors.

Biography

Michael has achieved a MSc Advanced Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy (MACP approved) and BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy.

Michael has over 15 years’ experience as a qualified Physiotherapist working across National Health Service (NHS), independent, sporting, and academic sectors. Michael has worked in an innovative clinical academic position between Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London. In this role, he was education lead for one of the largest Physiotherapy departments in the United Kingdom successfully delivering undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professional development and education initiatives. Michael has successfully led the operationalisation of undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy education and research programmes in higher academia. 

Michael has received several research and academic education awards from the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. He has expertise in utilising psychophysics methodologies (such as, quantitative sensory testing) to detect and interpret somatosensory profiles across a broad range of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain presentations. Michael is skilled in using evidence synthesis methodologies to generate impactful research informed teaching and practice. 

Michael is recognised for supporting, enhancing, and delivering high quality higher education teaching and learning. He has received a Fellowship of Advance Higher Education (FHEA). 

Michael is an Associate Editor for Pain Rehabilitation Journal and has been an executive committee member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy; Physiotherapy Research Society (2017-2021). Michael has used his research expertise to successfully deliver knowledge exchange consultancy activities with health technology industry partners.

Postgraduate supervision

Michael is interested in supervising Masters-Level dissertation projects across the following areas:

  • The detection and interpretation of nociception and pain
  • Identifying pain phenotypic expressions in a wide range of clinical populations. Using methodologies such as psychophysics
  • Associations between physical activity participation, psychosocial factors and neuromusculoskeletal pain presentations
  • Evidence synthesis methodologies including systematic review
