PhD Title: Psychological Demands of Intersectional Identity on Indonesian Athlete

Supervisors: Professor Brett Smith and Dr Sarah Williams

  • MSc Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Airlangga University - Indonesia (2006 – 2009)
  • BSc Psychology, Malang University – Indonesia (2000 – 2006)

Kurniati/Kay was Pencak Silat athlete since 2003 in the single artistic category and just retired in 2015. She works as a lecturer in Malang University (um.ac.id) since 2009, where she teaches sports psychology, Pencak Silat, and counsel student-athlete. She holds professional certification in teaching, coaching and I/O psychologist.

Her past achievement as an athlete leads her to win LPDP Scholarship from Indonesian Republic Ministry of Finance to pursue PhD in sport psychology.

Based on the premise that athletes' identity is layered and intersectional, Kurniati/Kay intends to explore the intersectionality issues of elite athletes in the Indonesian context. Indonesia has diverseness of cultures, ethnics and collectivism which probably creates a different pattern of identity. She intends to capture social-constructed psychological demands and ruminations of identities within this environment.
