Human tissue biorepository

Researcher in a labThe University is developing its own Human Biomaterials Resource Centre, which will be in operation by the end of 2010. The centre will collect and store quality-assured human tissue for use in biomedical research. It will support the specific needs of the University research teams, but tissue will also be made available to other biomedical UK research groups, including those in the commercial sector.

The centre is much more than a tissue store; it will be able to process tissue so it is research ready. The tissue collection will be tailored to suit the needs of researchers and the key research themes in the University - meaning that the centre will be one of the first tissue banks to house a very broad cross-section of tissue types. Tissue samples will be ethically approved beforehand and will save researchers the time they would normally spend on obtaining consent.

There are many hospitals in the West Midlands serving a broad range of ethnic groups. The University will therefore have access to tissue that could aid research into a variety of illnesses and conditions.
