My interest in EFL began after gaining my first degree, a BA in Linguistics, in 1980. This was consolidated with a PGCE in Teaching ESL, an MA in Linguistics & ELT (both from the University of Leeds) and then an MBA.
Following many years of teaching and middle-management positions in Finland, the Netherlands, China, the United Arab Emirates and Spain, I decided to pursue my career in the area of Business English. After joining the BIA (then EISU) in April 2001, I set up the Business Management English (BME) Presessional Course, designing course materials and collaborating in a number of in-house publications. I directed this programme until September 2008 as part of my responsibilities as Director of Business English Programmes.
From 2008 until very recently, I was Programme Manager for the year-round EAP1 Presessional which prepares international foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate (research) students for university entry. Currently, I manage the BIA's Insessional Programme. This role involves providing support and courses for the University's 4,000 international students on full-time degree programmes whose first language is not English.
