Tanmay Basu is a Research Fellow in biomedical informatics with interests in developing methods and tools using novel computational natural language processing, text mining, machine learning and sentiment analysis techniques for potential knowledge discovery in electronic health records, social media, biomedical publications, and other types of text data. Tanmay is based in the Centre for Computational Biology, Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India, 2014
  • Master of Computer Applications, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, 2008
  • BSc (Major) in Computer Applications, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India, 2002

Biography

A computer scientist by training, Tanmay has developed knowledge and skills within text mining, natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques since his master degree. His master's thesis describes the scopes of machine learning algorithms for retrieving geographical information from text, which helped me to gain the doctoral degree in Computer Science with emphasis on machine learning and text mining. His doctoral thesis explains some novel text clustering and classification methods. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University, Chicago and then at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. During this time, he worked on various projects related to information extraction from biomedical publications and electronic health records using machine learning and NLP.

In 2017, he came back to his homeland and spent few years as a junior faculty at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Belur Math, West Bengal, India. There he gained experience by teaching and mentoring the MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science students in different topics of machine learning and NLP.

He joined the University of Birmingham in August 2019 as a Research Fellow, to work on developing methods and tools for information extraction from electronic health records and to collaborate with other researchers and clinicians to develop novel solutions.

Research

The broad objective of Tanmay is to work on novel computational natural language processing, text mining, machine learning and sentiment analysis techniques for potential knowledge discovery in different types of text data. For the last few years, he has been working on information extraction from electronic health records, biomedical publications and social media to overcome several issues e.g., identifying the risk of depression over social media. He is also working on developing unsupervised methods for finding natural communities in social networks to improve the quality of recommender systems.
