Luke Slater is a Research Fellow in the Institute of Cancer and Genomics with an interest in ontology and ontology accessories, and their combination with other interdisciplinary techniques to gain novel and practically useful insights into information.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Open Source Computing, University of Aberystwyth 2012

Biography

Luke Slater studied Computer Science with a specialisation in open source computing at Aberystwyth University in Wales, receiving a BSc from this institution in 2012. Following this, he has worked as a Business Visitor at KAUST, Saudi Arabia. Since 2016, he has been studying for a PhD in Computational Biology at the Institute of Cancer and Genomics at Birmingham University.

Research

Luke’s research focuses on an ontology-based approach to analysis and knowledge representation in the biomedical sciences. During his PhD, he has worked with natural language processing and data mining in a clinical setting, extracting phenotype from clinical letters for the purposes of outcome prediction and patient stratification. He has also worked to analyse and evaluate logical consistency throughout the ontology ecosystem, working to create solutions that automatically identify and repair issues, with a view to improving experimental results.
