Biography

Julie Rayes completed her MA and PhD at the University of Denis Diderot-Paris VII in France (2003-2006) working on the role of Von Willebrand Factor and ADAMTS13 in thrombotic and bleeding disorders. During her PhD, she focused on the expression and characterisation of novel mutations identified in patients with Von willebrand disease or thrombotic thrombocytopenic Purpura.

During her first Post doc (2008-2010), she established a mouse model of VWD type 2B using hydrodynamic injection. During her second post doc (2011-2014), she focused on the crosslink between coagulation and complement and the role of complement activation in the immune response against therapeutic FVIII in haemophilia A. In 2014, she joined the University of Birmingham as a post doc with Pr. Steve Watson to investigate the role of platelets in inflammation and infection. She is focusing on the interaction between platelets and immune cells in particular macrophages in the modulation of the inflammatory reaction during sepsis.

Research

Julie’s main interest is to study the role of platelets in thrombo-inflammation and infection. She mainly works on the role of platelets in the modulation of infection-mediated inflammation and the modulation of immune cells functions in particular macrophages. Julie is also interested in the cross-talk between coagulation and complement and the role of these interactions in inflammation and thrombosis.
