Biography

After completing a degree in Environmental Health (Ronald Williams silver medallist) Madeleine worked as an Environmental Health Officer with Birmingham City Council, first in housing, then specialising in food. She joined the University of Birmingham in 1997 to provide the professional practice element to the MSc in Environmental Health.

Since then she has designed and developed a number of post graduate, undergraduate and CPD courses in food safety, building up the Food Safety Group to its current level. In addition to the award bearing courses (MSc in Food Safety Hygiene and Management and Certificate of Higher Education in Food Safety & Food Legislation), the group offers specialist short courses to Competent Authorities in the UK and overseas as well as to the food industry.

Postgraduate supervision

MSc and PhD project supervision centres on HACCP implementation and food hygiene training, particularly in SME’s and food service.

Research

My main research interests focus on the impact of interventions such as food safety management systems and food hygiene training on food safety and public health. I am currently involved in several projects, including

  • an assessment of food hygiene standards in street food vendors (Indonesia);
  • an evaluation of electronic systems for enhanced registration in food businesses (UK);
  • the effect of low temperature processing on selected food poisoning organisms (UK).

Other recent projects have included an evaluation of International Delivery of Controls (Food Standards Agency), use of software in maintaining cold chain integrity (ITaaU/FSA programme), Food hygiene knowledge, attitude and practice of food handlers and enforcement officers in Saudi Arabia and drafting food safety legislation for the Island of St. Helena.

Other activities

  • Better Training Safer Food (BTSF): 2015-17  Course Tutor/lecturer on  Investigation of food borne outbreaks, EC funded courses for standardisation of delivery of food controls in the EU
  • Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA): 2013-2017 Create and deliver a training programme for Food Inspectors in the SFDA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Covering theoretical and practical aspects of Food inspection, delivered in English and Arabic.
