UmmeSalma holds a BSc (Honours) degree in Computing and Information systems, an MS in management and a Doctorate in Business Management. She joined the University of Birmingham as the Programme Director to launch the BSc.(Hons) Business Management in Dubai campus. She is a Senior Lecturer in Management and Fellow of UK Higher Education Academy. 

She teaches Organisational behaviour and Critical Analysis in Management to the BSc(Hons) students, and Research Methods to MSc International Business students.

Her research interest is Islamic Tourism, Strategy, Islamic Management (both core and extended concepts), Comparative Management, and various facets of Sustainability.

 

She is particularly passionate about developing Student experience and Graduate employability in Transnational Higher Education.

Biography

UmmeSalma holds a BSc (Honours) degree in computing and information systems from London Guildhall University, an MS in management from SZABIST and a Doctorate in Business Administration from Swiss Management Center in Switzerland. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. Prior joining Birmingham, she was a Lecturer in Management and worked in the capacity of Undergraduate programme director and year coordinator for final honours year students at Heriot-Watt University’s Dubai campus, where she was in charge of a looking after student academic development and graduate employability. She was looking after a portfolio of undergraduate degree programmes and led a robust team of part-time and full-time members of staff.

She is particularly enthusiastic about student development and experience and developed the first Student Experience Unit at Heriot Watt University’s branch campus in Dubai in 2009. This led to academic publications of benchmarking student development at Transnational higher education in Dubai, and further made her name synonymous to a winner at teaching and learning Oscars by the University.

She taught International Business, Business Ethics, Management in a Global Context, Strategic Management and led the Entrepreneurship modules from development to delivery in her previous positions. Her major contributions being supervising the first Edinburgh based PhD student from Dubai campus and consistently delivering exceptional training for postgraduate dissertation students.

UmmeSalma specialises in Islamic management and tourism, particularly religious tourism and pilgrimage. She has been guest editor to international tourism and hospitality journals and is a regular reviewer for international tourism and strategy journals. She’s author of a text book in Islamic management and has written first of many themes such as Islamic communication in accounting. Her scholarly work is available in variety of journals and book chapters.

She is a business consultant and enjoys adding value to the business community in the region and abroad. Her major consultancy projects have been redesigning warehouse operations (purchasing and procurement) for the largest construction and contracting company in Dubai – DUTCO Balfour Beatty. She has worked on Emiratisation and looked at the TQM approach in developing skills at HE to support the UAE government’s nationalisation agenda. She has also been active in developing documentation for local HE accreditation for new universities.
