Muhammad Saqib Rabbani is Research Fellow in millimetre-wave wireless technologies. He has published over 40 research papers in scientific journals and conferences in the fields of Doppler radar for remote vital signs detection, millimetre wave and terahertz antenna technologies, metamaterial techniques and multi-Gbits/sec wireless networks.

Biography

Since 2017, Dr Rabbani is employed as Research Fellow in Wireless Communications and Sensors group at School of Electronic Electrical and System Engineering, University of Birmingham. He has worked on numerous industry (BAE Systems, DSTL, Samsung) collaborated projects on new millimetre-wave reconfigurable antenna and metamaterial technologies for 5G/6G, IoT, defence, healthcare systems and satellite applications. He has published over 40 research papers and book chapter in scientific journals and conferences in the fields of Doppler radar, millimetre wave and terahertz antenna systems, metamaterial techniques and multi-gigabits/sec wireless networks.
 
He is a reviewer of several journals including IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, Elsevier IJEC, MDPI Electronics and MDPI Sensors.

Postgraduate supervision

He co-supervise UG, PG, and PhD projects on novel topics on antennas, propagations, filters, metasurfaces for sensors/radars and other wireless systems.

Research

He has worked on the following projects for academic, security and commercial applications and has presented the measured results at various international conferences:

  • Designing of Doppler Radars at 10GHz, 60GHz and 100GHz for remote vital sign monitoring.
  • Metamaterial and Frequency Selective Surface based very high gain beam-steerable Leaky-Wave antenna designs at millimetre-wave band for 5G wireless systems.
  • Metamaterial absorbing surfaces design at RF and IR frequency bands for defence applications.
  • Electrically small beam switching printed circuit antenna designs for mobile and portable devices.
  • Designing of 2.4GHz, 5.8GHz, 60GHz and 300GHz band microstrip antennas for indoor Multi-gigabits/s WLAN and WPAN applications.
  • Designing of high gain microstrip antenna arrays at 635GHz and 835GHz frequencies for cancer detection with THz spectroscopy.
  • Size Improvement of microstrip antennas for conventional fabrication at mm-wave and THz frequencies.
  • DGS based filtering microstrip antennas for mm-wave and THz applications
  • Waveguide microwave filters based on discontinuities for X-band applications
  • Designing of high gain dielectric dome antennas at for 60GHz band wireless applications
  • Dual band antennas for 60GHz Duplexer applications.
  • Microstrip Filters Design for X, 60GHz and 100GHz bands applications

He is currently investigating designing of planar antennas and transmission line circuits at mm-wave and THz frequencies and their implementation in high data rate wireless communications, medical diagnoses, satellite communications, vital sign monitoring, and explosive and arm detection. He is working closely with printed circuit boards, micro-fabrication and micro-machining workshops to realise the state of the art components design under practical limitations.
