Dr Ji Li is currently a research fellow working on vehicle electrification, personalization, and digitalization at Birmingham CASE Automotive Research and Education Centre.

Ji has awarded the PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2020 at the University of Birmingham, where the thesis title is Driver-oriented Intelligent Control Methodology for Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles. During the PhD study, he was involved in building the UoB’s first driver-in-the-loop (DiL) platform for automotive research with £120k investment from EPSRC.

Ji has published over 20 peer-rereferred research papers in scientific journals as well as conference papers, and book chapters in the fields of electrified powertrain design, energy management optimization, driving behaviour modelling, cyber-physical data fusion, and digital twinning of power machines.

Biography

Ji Li received the BEng from Chongqing University of Technology, China, in 2015 and was awarded the PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2020 from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Ji has been carrying out postdoctoral research at the University of Birmingham on an industrial-funded research fellowship position in vehicle electrification, personalization, and digitalization. He has received major grants from several OEMs and research institutes e.g., BYD Auto Ltd, Jiangsu Alternative Energy Vehicle Research Institute, and Tsinghua University Suzhou Automotive Research Institute.

Currently, Ji is devoted to the research on powertrain decarbonization, human-machine interaction system and cyber-physical data fusion. He has published over 20 peer-rereferred research papers in scientific journals as well as conference papers, and book chapters. As of April 2022, the Google Scholar citations are 353, and H-index is 11.

Postgraduate supervision

Co-supervising PhD students in intelligent vehicle technology with Professor Hongming Xu. Full-time PhD applicants and visiting professors/scholars/students are welcome in the following areas:

  • Evolutionary multi-objective optimisation for online/offline optimisation of vehicle system;
  • Reinforcement Learning for real-time advanced decision making of vehicle systems;
  • Model-based predictive control for energy management of hybrid vehicles;
  • Human factors for driving safety and economy;
  • Information fusion and global energy efficiency optimisation of connected autonomous vehicles;

Excellent PhD applicants will have the opportunity to be sponsored by the university’s PhD scholarship. We can support application on external funding (e.g. Newton/EPSRC Fellowship, EPSRC StudentshipCSC PhD Scholarship).
