Daniela is a postdoctoral research fellow in Professor Hodson’s group 

Her research focuses on islet biology and more specifically, the role that beta-cellular heterogeneity has on islet function.

Daniela started her professional career as a general practitioner in Macedonia, after earning her MD degree in 2004 from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia. She holds a PhD in medicine from the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition at Kyoto University in Japan, which she earned in 2014. Her PhD research explored the role of the incretin hormone GIP and its link to obesity. She moved to the ULB-Université Libre De Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium in 2015 and worked on understanding the mechanisms mediating ER stress-related beta cell death. In 2016, she joined Professor Hodson’s group at the IMSR where she works on elucidating the intricacies of islet biology.


Daniela’s work in beta cell heterogeneity focuses on the existing degrees of beta cell maturity and how different less- or more-mature beta cells come together to ensure proper islet function and maintenance of normal blood sugar levels.

She also explores novel players involved in normal insulin secretion from the pancreatic islets, such as the enzyme PHD3, for which purpose she develops mouse models and traces the PHD3 role both in vivo and in vitro.
