Lisa is a PhD student in Professor Tennant’s group. Her PhD project explores the role of proline metabolism in hypoxic cancers and the tumour-stroma metabolic interaction under low oxygen tensions.


MSc in Biomedical Sciences


Lisa graduated with a Msc in Biomedical Sciences (with honours) from the University of Padova (Italy) in 2017.

During her research training at the Veneto Institute of Oncology (IOV) in Italy she developed a strong interest in cancer metabolism. This interest led her to Belgium at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology, where she worked on lipid metabolism in liver tumours. Then, she joined the Tennant lab to start her PhD at the University of Birmingham in 2018.


Current PhD project

Investigating the role of proline metabolism in cancer and in the tumour microenvironment, under the supervision of Professor Daniel Tennant and Dr Christian Ludwig.

Research training

Exploring the role of lipid metabolism in liver cancer, under the supervision of Professor Sarah-Maria Fendt at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology (Belgium) in 2018.

Masters degree project

Understanding the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with clinical applications, under the supervision of Professor Vincenzo Ciminale, Dr Francesco Ciccarese and Professor Ildikò Szabò at the Veneto Institute of Oncology (Italy) in 2017.
